Sciatica is a word used to describe the symptoms of numbness, pain and sometimes tingling or weakness which radiates through the sciatic nerve downward from your low back toward and into the leg and/or foot.
The symptoms are usually only felt on one side. Depending on where the nerve is affected, the pain, weakness, burning or tingling may extend anywhere from the buttock to the foot. The pain is sometimes described as a sharp, burning, searing pain, instead of an ache or throb. It can also be a combination of several of these.
Sciatica treatment aims to address both its root causes and effects. At Brook Chiropractic Neurology we use some of the most advanced technologies available.
Chiropractic treatment for sciatica can help reduce pain and increase mobility, and overall improve quality of life.
What causes sciatica?
Generally, sciatica results from problems in the low back between the vertebra known as L4 in the lumbar region and S1 in the sacral area.
This section of the spinal column is prone to a variety of problems which can irritate or place pressure on the nerve root.
Sciatica can result from a problem with one or more of the spinal discs which cushion between each vertebra. One frequent cause of sciatica is a herniated disk pressing against a particular nerve root.
The condition can also happen if a disc degenerates. This releases proteins which irritate and inflame nearby nerves. We know that there are several other possible causes, including spinal malalignment.
How to treat sciatica
It's important to keep in mind that sciatica is the symptom of various underlying conditions, not a disease in and of itself in most cases.
At Brook Chiropractic Neurology, we focus first on finding the possible cause of pain, then treating it effectively to reduce that pain.
When you visit us, we can examine you, listen to the history of the problem, then recommend specific treatments and tests. Our goal is to help you feel better.
